The arts and crafts movement had its origins in late 19th century England as a reaction to the cheap, mass produced furniture of the industrial age. Its tenets include: simplicity of design, excellence of workmanship, the best wood and raw materials, and an emphasis on hand crafting. In America, some examples of arts and crafts, or the craftsman style, include the works of Gustav Stickley and his brothers L and J. G., Roycroft, Harvey Ellis, Tiffany, and others. The so-called “mission” furniture is an example of the arts and crafts, or “craftsman” style.
